Part 1: Introduction to Paddy Farming
“Welcome to our complete guide on Organic Paddy Cultivation. Rice is a staple food…”Paddy, or rice, is a basic necessity and a staple food for more than half of the world’s population. It is a semi-aquatic crop that thrives in water-rich environments. In Northern India, including Uttarakhand, it is primarily grown as a major monsoon crop.
For example, Dehradun is globally recognized for its Basmati Rice, famously known as the “King of Rice.” Additionally, Uttarakhand is home to the highly nutritious Red Rice, locally known as Rathi, grown at higher altitudes in the Kumaon and Garhwal regions.
Part 2: Organic Seedling Preparation (Nursery Stage)
“For successful organic paddy cultivation, seed treatment is crucial. The organic journey begins with natural methods instead of chemicals…”The organic journey begins with natural seed treatment to ensure healthy growth without synthetic chemicals. We rely on traditional, time-tested methods:
- Organic Seed Coating: Seeds are “polished” or coated with a natural mixture of Cow Dung (Gobar) and Cow Urine (Gomutra). This provides nutrients and acts as a natural shield (Beejamrit) against diseases.
- Nursery Sowing: Once treated, the seeds are broadcasted onto prepared soil beds.
- Nursery Duration: It takes approximately 20 to 25 days for the seeds to transform into strong, healthy seedlings ready for the main field.
Part 3: Field Preparation and Transplanting
Preparing the main field is a crucial step that requires precision and careful timing to ensure a high-quality organic yield.
Organic Foundation: We apply Vermicompost or Farmyard Manure (Gobar ki Khaad) to the field at least one week before planting as a slow-release nutrient source.
Field Engineering: We build sturdy Bunds (soil borders/Mera) along the edges of the field to effectively store and manage water levels.
The Puddling Process: After flooding the field, we use a tractor with a puddler to thoroughly plough the soil until it becomes perfectly muddy (Lehi/Puddling).
Precision Transplanting: Healthy seedlings are transplanted with a specific gap of 20 cm (row to row) × 10–15 cm (plant to plant).
Part 4: Nutrient and Pest Management
In organic farming, we maintain crop health and soil vitality without the use of synthetic chemical sprays.
Liquid Organic Manure: We apply Jeevamrit (a traditional liquid bio-fertilizer made from Gomutra and Jaggery) to fulfill all the nutrient requirements of the crop.
Manual Weed Control: We perform Hand Weeding (Nirai-Gudai) during the early growth stages to ensure the paddy has no competition for nutrients.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM): To manage harmful pests, we use physical methods such as Insect Traps and strategic sowing times.
The Marigold Strategy: We plant Marigold (Genda Phool) cuttings along the field bunds. This helps manage weeds, attracts butterflies, and provides farmers with extra income.
Part 5: Harvesting and Storage
- Methods: Harvesting is done by a Sickle (Daranti) or a harvester, followed by threshing.
Safe Storage: Rice must be stored in a neat, moisture-free, and pest-free environment to avoid fungal or pest attacks.
